Marjorie McFarland Hester
February 20, 1923 - May 30, 2010
Marjorie McFarland Hester
BLUFFTON, SC – Marjorie McFarland Hester, 87, passed away May 30, 2010 at the home she lived in for twenty-six years in Bluffton, SC.
Marge was born in Clarkston, Michigan on February 20, 1923, the daughter of the late Leon Russell and Helen McFarland.
She moved to Savannah, Georgia in 1933, when she was ten years old, where her father opened Cheeseman Ice Cream Store where the family all worked together, located at State and Barnard Streets.
Marge finished Savannah High School in 1940 and went on to graduate from Armstrong Junior College and the University of South Carolina. She met John Robert "Bob" Hester while meeting with Epworth United Methodist Church in Savannah. They married in April, 1944. They were married for almost sixty years until Bob passed away in January, 2004. Marge was a faithful wife and mother. They lived most of their lives together in Savannah, residing in Gordonston subdivision and then at 123 East 46th Street, until they moved to Bluffton, SC in 1984.
Marge and Bob were very involved in Epworth United Methodist Church, even after they moved to Bluffton. They were faithful to the work of the church. In her later years she was a member of Bluffton United Methodist Church. Because of her excellent soprano voice, she was very helpful to singing groups in church choirs and community chorales. Because of her experience in women's Bible studies in Savannah, she was a charter member of the Christian Women's Club in Savannah and the Community Bible Study work that started in the Hilton Head-Bluffton area. Because of Bob's profession as a dentist in Savannah, Marge was active in the Georgia Dental Auxiliary and was president in 1967-1968.
Marge's career was her family. She is survived by four children, nine grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren: Robie and Cathy Hester of Bluffton, SC, who have two children and one grandchild; Suzanne and Tom Tippett of Opelika, AL, who have three children and six grandchildren; Steve and Janet Hester of Port Wentworth, GA, who have two children; and John and Jean Hester of Rincon, GA, who have two children. Marge is also survived by her sister Beverly Simoneaux and George, nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 3, 2010, at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel with Rev. Billy Hester and Dr. Tom Tippett officiating.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.
Interment will follow in the Hester Family Cemetery in Meinhard.
Remembrances may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association of Savannah, 201 Television Circle, Savannah, GA 31406 or to a favorite charity.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Margorie's passing. As a child, I remember thinking when she would sing a solo in the Epworth Church choir that I was hearing an angel singing...well, she is now with the Angelic choir of heaven. She will be missed. My prayers are with Robie, Suzanne, Steve & John. God bless you all at this sad time, and may He provide you with inner peace knowing that she is now with her Lord. Peace. Charlie Solomons, Jr.Chip
